In the Company of Angels: Episode 1.1 – A Rumpus in the Library

In the Company of Angels, Episode 1.1 (Pilot) – A Rumpus in the Library

“Since the earliest of times, even from the dawn of man, when mystics first painted images on the walls of the caves at Lascaux and Altamira, there have been rumors: rumors that the worlds drawn in pigment and charcoal exist not only in the minds of the artists who created them, but in actual fact. And in every age, children are born who gaze with wonder at these worlds and ask ‘are they real?’ and ‘can I go there?’

“These journals are dedicated to those of us who never stopped asking those questions. They chronicle a story that began long before our own time, but that I take up in the present day. If you are reading my words or hearing my voice, then you are being entrusted with knowledge that very few have possessed over the long march of the centuries. My name is Azarias, and these are the tales of our Order: of those who have, in the past, been called the Fratrum Simulacrorum, but who are today known simply as The Framerunners.”

                                — Brother Azarias, Fratrum Simulacrorum Archives Manual

It all began on a chilly February morning in Chelsea Heights. Jill Jonsson was sitting at her kitchen table, watching the birds in the outdoor bird feeder, her blonde hair glowing golden in the morning sunlight. There were two cardinals, a male and a female, that flitted back and forth between the feeder and the bare fig tree in the front yard. They reminded Jill of the Christmas ornaments that she and her mother had put away just the week before.

Suddenly, Jill was startled by a loud thump and a crash. The noises came from the back of the house, and she immediately jumped up to see what Hazel, her mischievous tomcat, might have gotten into. But then she noticed Hazel sitting nonchalantly by his food dish, looking curiously toward the hallway.

Jill lived with her mother in the house at 1513 Vida Way. It was a small cottage, but nice; Jill had her very own tiny bedroom upstairs, and her mother had turned a spare room in the back of the downstairs into a library just for her.

Two full walls of the library sported bookcases, and these groaned under the weight of Jill’s favorites: the Narnia Chronicles, the Princess and the Goblin, The Hobbit, A Wrinkle in Time, The Wind in the Willows. These were just a few of the many in her collection, but she also loved mysteries and tales of other worlds than these, and longed for the time when she would be old enough to read books that, for now, her mother considered too difficult for her.

Jill also collected posters and prints of her favorite characters and scenes from her books, and these covered what little wall space was not already claimed by bookshelves: Fledge the Winged Horse flying through Narnia; Bilbo Baggins walking in the Shire; Mole and Rat poling down the river together. She even had a painting that she loved, but that didn’t seem to belong in any particular fairy tale: it was just a beautiful scene from a late summer’s day, with a gnarled oak tree and a little boy seated beneath it. He was playing a sort of a flute. Behind him stretched a river, and circling around him were wispy fairy-like figures that seemed to be dancing while he played.

But now Jill was startled and a little perplexed by the noises from library. Hazel had been known to knock over her bookcases; it had happened before, heaven knows! But now there sat Hazel, looking back and forth at her and at the hallway. So, something else must have happened, and there was nothing for it but to go see just what.

“Come on, Hazel, let’s see if anything is broken,” she said. Hazel ignored her, remaining firmly planted beside his food dish.

Jill stepped out of the kitchen, but then she halted. She heard more noises coming from the back of the house. Now she was a bit frightened. It occurred to her that a raccoon might have gotten inside, or perhaps even a burglar; and she was all alone in the house! She looked around and grabbed a broom from the pantry, then she slowly tiptoed down the hallway, trying her best not to make the slightest sound.

She crept toward the door to the library, but nothing seemed to be stirring. Jill was just starting to relax, when she heard a second crash, and a loud “Ouch!” coming from the library door.  She tiptoed closer and peeped inside.

Sprawled upon the floor was a man with his back to the wall and his long legs stretched out; beside him stood a boy with curly black hair wearing a rumpled sweatshirt. The library desk, which was a heavy old fashioned rolled-top that had been made by Jill’s great uncle, was knocked halfway across the room. It appeared almost as if someone or something had come hurtling through space and struck the side of it, skidding it and leaving scratch marks on the hardwood floor. And of course, this is very nearly what had happened. The man on the floor was rubbing his forehead and wincing. The boy was looking up at the wall behind the man; on it was a large poster-sized painting of a centaur in a wood in Narnia.

Just then the man looked up and saw her. “Oh! I’m sorry! We didn’t know anyone was home!”

The boy turned around, and said “Jill!” at the exact same time that Jill said “Sam!”

The man looked at both of them. “Oh, do you two know each other?”

“I should say so!” said Sam. “Jill is in my class. She’s my friend.”

“Ah, well then, that’s good, then there’s nothing to worry about. I’ve just bumped my head, you see….” The man indicated to Jill the lump on his forehead, which looked quite red and swollen.

“Yes, but you almost crushed me on the way in,” said Sam, crossly. He rubbed his shoulder and flexed his arm to make sure it was still functioning properly.

“But who are you?” asked Jill, “and whatever are you both doing in my library?!”

“Ah, yes, that…” the man slowly pulled himself up from the floor, steadying himself against the wall. He was tall, looked to be in his early twenties, and had longish hair and a thin, closely-cropped beard. He brushed himself off. He was wearing a long duster coat that made Jill think of Sherlock Holmes.

“My name is Luke; Luke Lester.” He reached out his hand toward Jill, who didn’t move from her position by the door; in fact, she still held the broom in front of her to show them both that she was armed.

“Oh, come on Jill, be a good sport. We’re not here to hurt you!” said Sam.

“Then what are you here for?”

“Yes, well, I expect this is a bit of a surprise for her, Sam,” said Luke, “and I don’t blame you for being wary, my dear. Let me apologize for the mess.” Luke looked at the desk and, with Sam’s help, pushed it back into place. “We were, well, chasing someone, and we…uh…thought we saw him come into your library through a…um…through a window.”

“But the window’s locked,” said Jill, “and we have an alarm system.”

Luke looked at the window, still rubbing his forehead. “Yes, that does seem to be true. I suppose perhaps the alarm may have malfunctioned? But, this fellow was definitely in your house, you see, and he had something that…well…that we were afraid would cause him harm if we didn’t get it back; something that he seems to have gotten hold of…uh…by accident.“ He paused for a moment. “You haven’t, well, seen any strangers in your house today, have you?”

“You mean, other than you?!”

“Ah…yes…other than me, since you already know Sam…”

“Well, no, I haven’t. But I don’t think that matters. You both need to go. My mom will be home any minute and I think it would be better if you left.”

“Quite right! Quite right!” said Luke. “I’m sure we must have been mistaken, after all, Sam,” he said, turning to Sam and smiling. “Well, if you’ll just lead us to the front door, Jane, we’ll be off. I’m terribly sorry about all of this….” Luke suddenly put his hand against the wall and rubbed his eyes.

“Are you alright?” asked Jill.

“Yes, Mr. Luke, you don’t look too well…” said Sam.

“Yes, yes, I’ll be fine. Just a combination of taking an unexpected run and then bopping my head. I need a moment….” He shook his head again and muttered something under his breath. Sam put his hands on his hips and said something back to him, also under his breath, which sounded to Jill rather like “…well, you didn’t tell me there’d be wild boars in Narnia, of all places…”

“Well, you don’t look fine, either one of you! Would you like me to call someone for you?”

“No, no. But, that’s very kind of you.” Luke looked at her more closely. “Why, you have very nice manners for a little girl!”

“I am not a little girl!” said Jill. “I’ll be thirteen next week!”

“My mistake, I should have said ‘for a young lady’. I’m afraid I’m still a bit groggy. Will you accept my apology?” Luke again reached out his hand to Jill. This time she timidly accepted it.

Jill led them toward the front door, but when they reached it, Luke sat abruptly down on the lowest step of the stairway leading to the second floor. He gripped the handrail tightly.

“Would you like some water…or tea…or something?” Jill asked.

“Well, you know, I expect this will sound a bit strange, but…would you happen to have a bit of chocolate anywhere in the house?”

Characters

Character List

Ahmed, Blacky, the blonde, Jack and Patel — Names of the five men who attempt to burn down the Gallery.

Aym — A formidable entity mentioned by Blacky (one of the men who attempt to burn down the Gallery). Presumably Aym is a powerful person or spirit within the Amenta order.

Azarias – Protagonist and main narrator. Age unknown, but certainly an older man and wizard figure, with long grey hair and beard.

Mrs. Craig – The art teacher at Jill and Sam’s school.

Chris and Cathy Jonsson – Jill’s aunt and uncle. Chris is Will’s brother and Evie’s brother-in-law.

Evie Jonsson – Jill’s mother.

Fr. Hildebrandt – Abbott Primate of the Benedictine Order and affiliated with the Framerunners in an advisory capacity. Age unknown, but certainly a mature older man. Clean shaven with dark hair that is turning silver at temples.

Hazel – Jill’s cat, a large male tabby.

Jill Jonsson – Protagonist, app. 12-13 years old. Same class in school as Sam. Blonde hair usually pulled back into a pony tail.

Luke Lester – Protagonist, app. early 20s. Short cropped beard and dark hair. Pupil of Azarias and full member of the Order. A painter and artist with a gift for quickly and skillfully rendering images that allow Framerunning to new or existing Realms. Because he is a consummate artist, he comes across at times as being a bit scattered and absent-minded; he is often living “in his own head” or in his paintings, so sometimes needs reminding about immediate issues/threats/concerns.

Mrs. Mills – The Professor’s housekeeper.

Munnin – The name ultimately given the raven captured in Oxford, England when he is given to Fr. Hildebrandt for safekeeping.

Osor – The first and greatest of the Masters (the Imperaferrum, as the Ferrubene came to call themselves). He was the first to thrust open the gateway in Cenurbus and attempt to leave the prison that had held him and the other Masters since their apocalyptic fall on Orbaratus.

The Piper – A boy with curly black hair appearing to be approximately the same age as Sam. Always seen with a pennywhistle, which he uses to summon and lead shadowy fairy-like creatures (his “familiars”).

Polydora – The Keeper of the Gallery. Originally from the planet Orbaratus.

The Professor – Met by Jill and Sam when chasing the raven through the portal found on Orbaratus. The Professor resides in Oxford, England, and Jill and Sam meet him in the year 1946.

Rusty and Kate Jonsson – Jill’s first cousins. Kate is approximately the same age as Jill; Rusty is younger…perhaps about 8 or 9. Kate is sweet on Sam.

Sam Deckard – Protagonist, app. 12-13 years old. Same class in school as Jill. Dark brown hair, somewhat curly.

William Jonsson – Jill’s father (called “Will), whom we find out went missing about a year before the series begins.

Glossary

Glossary

The following is a detailed description of terms and place names that you may encounter when reading episodes of The Framerunners:

Amenta – An Egyptian glyph meaning “the underworld” or “world of the dead”. The term, for Framerunners, is generally applied to a class of evil spirit beings and those humans they control. The Amenta are an ancient order of spirits that seek power and the destruction of others. They have been fought on our world and in other worlds for as long as records have been kept. The Amenta glyph has sometimes been used as a “brand” or tattoo on those who have sworn allegiance to the Amenta spirits. The glyph looks like this:

Base Image – The unique image a Framerunner uses to enter another realm. The base image is important because travel to a realm and back via a crystal is tied to that one image. Multiple reproductions of a scene provide multiple ways to reach the realm in question, but each “run” from any image to the realm in question sets the portal so that the next return trip is to the image and time when it was last used. Thus, framerunning from a particular base image sets the portal in the other world. If someone else frameruns to the same portal from a different time or place, then anyone returning via that portal goes to that new time or place…which may not be the one they intended! One additional consequence of this is that a single base image, used by different people but at different times, can cause someone to inadvertently time travel back to that base image in an earlier (or later!) time than the one they came from.

Cenurbus –  The capital city of Orbaratus. Cenurbus is where Polydora was secreted away at birth, and where the gateway to the resting place of the Masters was located.

Chocolate – An antidote to “frame fatique”, which occurs when anyone frameruns multiple realms in succession, or if a particular frame presents difficulties due to poor image quality or other aspects that make a “run” arduous, or if the Framerunner experiences injuries or general weariness while framerunning.

Crystals (a.k.a. “Sapphires”, “Gems”, “Stones”) – The jewels that allow a person to “framerun” a painting or drawing. These must be in physical contact with the person wishing to enter into the realm depicted in the painting or sketch. These same terms may be applied to other gems, such as the Guarding Stones on Orbaratus, or the crystal on Azarias’ staff, but unless otherwise specified, a “crystal”, or “sapphire”, or “gem” is assumed to be one of those used for framerunning.

Empath – One of the three primary categories of Framerunners, and by far the rarest (the other two being Navigator and Renderer). Empaths are the communicators; they can sense the presence of sentient and nonsentient beings and in many cases have telepathic capabilities. Jill Jonsson is an Empath.

Ferrubene – The original name for the master race, or The Masters (the Imperaferrum), on the planet OrbaratusThe Ferrubene were destroyed by warring among themselves after they had created their servants, the Ferrumari. The destruction of the Ferrubene was instigated by the Amenta.

Ferrumari – A race of brilliant and graceful beings from the planet OrbaratusThe Ferrumari were believed to have been a species created originally to be servants by an unknown master race on Orbaratus. That race died off, for reasons that remain unclear, leaving the Ferrumari as the only sentient species remaining on the planet. The Ferrumari are made entirely of metal. They are tall and graceful, with wings that fold back behind them. They are six fingered and six toed, with dual thumbs on their hands, making them extremely dextrous. All of the members of their race, with the sole exception of Polydora, were destroyed in great wars on their planet instigated by the Amenta.

Frame – The “edges” of any painting or drawing that form the boundaries through which a Framerunner passes in order to enter another realm; sometimes also referred to as a “portal”. The portal created by a base image visually appears in the realm visited as a window, often hanging in space, that disappears once a Framerunner is no longer in contact with his or her crystal. But, that frame/portal will reappear once the crystal is touched again, and it can be used to take a Framerunner back to the base image from which they came, unless the portal was last accessed from a different base image.

A portal remains open in any realm for a long time after the base image (painting or reproduction) that was used to reach that realm is not destroyed, but it will eventually fade. It is refreshed whenever a new person comes into the realm by that image or any reproduction of that image, but then the “refreshed” portal leads to the last base image used to framerun.

Thus a single frame, though a portal to a realm via numerous reproduced images, will still return a Framerunner to the unique image they used to travel through, unless someone else has come through in the meantime; in that case, a Framerunner may find him or herself in a place or time that they don’t know.

If any specific image is destroyed, however, and if it is the only base image for that frame/portal, the frame/portal in the realm visited is also destroyed. That is, if a base image is destroyed while you are visiting a realm, and if it is the only such image, then the only way back is to create a new painting through which to travel back. Most images have multiple copies, so a portal will not be completely destroyed even if a particular base image is destroyed; but the path back to that original base image is no longer there. Likewise, if a base image has never been used for framerunning, or has not been used in a very long time, no usable portal will exist in the realm depicted.

Framerunner – A person who enters a realm depicted in a painting or drawing. The term, originally taken from the Latin Fratrum Simulacrorum , or the “Brotherhood of Images”, is primarily applied to a member of the ancient order that has, over the centuries, guarded the secret of the crystals and sought to prevent their use by malefactors, or their accidental misuse by innocent bystanders who may come into possession of a crystal.

Fratrum Simulacrorum — The formal order of Framerunners that initiates those who have a need or desire to become Framerunners themselves in the service of others and for the good of humanity and all free folk of the Iconic Realms.

The Gallery – The informal name given the warehouse which forms the home base for Luke Lester and the Framerunners. Consisting of an enormous warehouse of images from different worlds/times/places, the Gallery provides portals to all of the known Iconic Realms, and is constantly being expanded as needed. Many of the images in the Gallery have been painted by past and current members of the Order, including Luke Lester, but there are also archival images of realms that were created hundreds and even thousands of years the past. The gallery’s holdings are maintained by Polydora.

Guarding Stones (a.k.a. “Sealing Stones”) –  These are the three sapphires set on either side and above the gateway into the resting place of the Masters on Orbaratus. When any of them are removed, their ability to hold the Masters in suspension and prevent the gateway from being breached is compromised.

Howler – a shorthand name for the Amenta spirits. They are so-called because their presence is often accompanied by an eerie animal-like howling, particularly if someone or something is recognized by them as an enemy (as most of the Framerunners are).

Imperaferrum – The name, in the language of the Ferrubene, that The Masters gave themselves once they succumbed to the Amenta.

Iconic Realms – The sum total of all worlds, time-tethered or otherwise, that can be visited by a Framerunner. Typically this does not refer to our own world, since its status is unique, but to all those that can be visited from our own.

Keeper – Honorary title given to Polydora. She is the primary caretaker of The Gallery.

The Masters – The name of the original race of intelligent beings to inhabit the planet Orbaratus. See “Ferrubene”.

Mazerunning – A shorthand term used for Framerunning a looking glass, or mirror. Mirrors in our world or in any of the Iconic Realms open onto other mirrors, also in that specific realm. The “space” that connects mirrors is referred to as the Maze, and is a very confusing space to enter. Mirrors can allow one to step quickly from one place to another, but it can be hazardous, as the placement of the mirrors in the Maze is not always logical, and one can easily become disoriented. Glassrunning is usually only used for fast escapes and/or temporary hiding rather than travel.

Navigator – One of the three primary categories of Framerunners. Navigators are those gifted with a strong sense of direction, excellent mapping skills, and almost always the strongest ability to framerun nearly any image. Navigators are the only ones that are typically undaunted by Mazerunning. They are also extremely skilled at detecting and returning to open frames in any Realm. Sam Deckard is a Navigator.

Orbaratus – The home planet of the race of synthetic beings known as the Ferrumari. Polydora is the last of the Ferrumari: a survivor of the great wars that were instigated by the Amenta and that destroyed much of her planet. The planet was first imagined and painted by 20th century dystopian artist Acasi Simaov.

Order – a shorthand reference to Fratrum Simulacrorum, or the Framerunners’ order.

Pilgrim – any being from one of the Iconic Realms that ends up, whether intentionally or not, in our world. If possible, Framerunners try to return Pilgrims to their own realm as quickly as possible, lest their presence here (and absence from their original realm) cause problems between the Realms.

Piper (a.k.a. “Piper of Dreams”) – An enigmatic figure who appears both in our world and in the Iconid Realms. Thought initially to be a malefactor, his appearance tends to signify a breach of some sort, and often can be used as a signal that something is amiss in the Iconic Realms.

Plaza of the Masters – The plaza located on a peak in Cenurbus where the lore of the Masters (a.k.a. the Ferrubene) was kept. Also, at the edge of this plaza, and set into the side of the mountain, was the gateway leading down to the resting place of the Masters.

Portal – Another name for a “frame”. The terms are often used interchangeably, and both refer to the actual anomaly in space/time that opens whenever a Framerunner is in contact with one of the crystals and views a framerunnable image.

Renderer – One of the three primary categories of Framerunners. Renderers are the true artists among the Framerunners. They are able to imagine and render (draw/paint) images that can be framerun, usually quickly and under pressure. They may also reproduce lost works so that a Realm that otherwise might not be accessible becomes so again. Luke Lester is a Renderer.

Sealing Stones – See “Guarding Stones”.

Spook (a.k.a. “Apparition”) – Informal name for a spirit being in a visual form. These can be benign (e.g., the Piper’s “familiars”) as well as malignant (e.g. the Amenta, or Howlers).

Time-Tethered – A world among the Iconic Realms that one can visit, but that is directly linked to our world. Changing anything in such realms (as can happen when Framerunning an historical painting of a real place, time, and/or people) can directly alter reality in our own world; thus Framerunning a time-tethered realm is extraordinarily dangerous and must be done with extreme caution.
